Symptoms & Signs of Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid) or
Excessive Thyroid Hormone Replacement Therapy

Signs

  • Feeling hot
  • Fast strong pulse
  • Warm moist palms
  • Increased perspiration
  • Weight loss or weight gain        
  • Frequent loose stools or diarrhoea        
  • Need less than 7 hrs sleep
  • No periods or light periods with longer cycles
  • Decreased cholesterol levels
  • Fast reflexes
  • Goitre
  • Hair loss
  • Dry or moist thin skin that flushes easily
  • Brittle nails
  • When you stick out your tongue, you can’t hold your tongue still
  • Shakiness/tremors (fingers/hands/arms)
  • Staring eyes
  • Lid retractions (bulging eyes)        
  • Eye irritation
  • Hives

Symptoms

  • High libido
  • Hyperactive
  • Ambitious (initially)
  • Talkativeness
  • Fast speech and racing thoughts
  • Feels numb towards partner
  • Makes decisions quickly (impulsive)
  • Fatigue/exhaustion
  • Symptoms of hypoglycaemia
  • Depression (usually short lived, but recurrent)
  • Anxiety/nervousness
  • Panic attacks – racing pulse
  • Mood swings
  • Headaches
  • Muscle weakness – cramps
  • Loss of muscle tone
  • Insomnia
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)/PMDD
  • Emotional and behavioural problems
  • Infertility
  • Aggression – temper
  • Irritability
  • Poor focus (unable to complete tasks)
  • Palpitations                                
  • Shortness of breath
  • Restlessness (unable to sit still)
  • Chest pain
  • Increased thirst/appetite
  • Itchy skin


Important
The symptoms and signs listed above may occur in other conditions as well
and may be unrelated to thyroid disease. However the listed symptoms and
signs do commonly occur in people with hyperthyroidism.
